Ingredients
2 cups milk
½ granulated sugar cup
1⁄4 teaspoon of salt
2 lightly beaten eggs
6 cups cubed dry bread (8 slices)
If preferred, ½ cup raisins
1 cup brown sugar, packed
2 tbsp heavy whipping cream
2 tsp brandy extract or 3 to 4 tbsp bourbon
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 °F. Heat milk and 1/4 cup butter in a 2-quart saucepan over medium heat until butter is melted and milk is hot.
Combine granulated sugar, cinnamon, salt, and eggs with a wire whisk in a large mixing dish. Add the bread cubes and raisins and mix well.
Mix in the milk mixture.
Fill an ungreased 8-inch square (2-quart) glass baking dish or 1 1/2-quart casserole with the batter. Pour boiling water into a 13x9-inch baking pan until it is 1 inch deep.
Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted 1 inch from the edge of the baking dish comes out clean.
Heat all sauce ingredients in a 1-quart heavy saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the sugar is dissolved.
Serve with warm bread pudding. Place in the refrigerator.
